Kevin plank has had a lifelong interest in sports, and in particular football, where the idea for founding the company, Under Armour emerged.

Kevin’s mother is a former mayor of Kensington, Maryland, where the family resided during his youth. His father worked for the federal government in land development. Kevin attended private Catholic schools as a youngster and is noted to have struggled with behavioral issues and graduated from the St. Johns College High School in 1990, then attended the University of Maryland and graduated with a BA in Business Administration. His first business venture, while a collegiate, was called Cupid, which sold roses and related items especially noting Valentine’s Day. From that business, he created a competition called The Cupid Cup.
Frustrated with the amount of perspiration he experienced on the football field, Kevin Plank began to research ideas for synthetics that might help lessen the degree of perspiration experienced by athletes during competition. He utilized services of local clothiers to create a prototype.
Plank utilized personal give-away, and an advertising campaign in ESPN Magazine, which the following year grossed over $1 million in orders. This was the turning point for Under Armour, which gained its name from conversation with a family member.
Kevin Plank was married in 2003. He and his wife have two children. He has invested in real estate, and his company is privately held gleaning dividends from investments in diverse causes ranging from commercial real estate to thoroughbred horse racing. He is among the top fifty philanthropists in the US accordingly, and has made contributions to political causes, and more recently, $25 million to the University of Maryland and $16 million to his former high school. Under Armour is based in Baltimore, Maryland, and is an active producer of footwear and sportswear sold worldwide.
